What do heroes do?Do they fight monsters? Sometimes, but they also hold the hands of people who are sick and lonely. They build schools. They study the planets. They forgive those who have harmed them. Heroes are people who look at the world around them, see what needs to be done, and through the grace of God find the strength to help others. In the thirty-six stories in Loyola Kids Book of Heroes, you’ll meet a Catholic nun who stood up to the most infamous outlaw in the Old West. You’ll learn how entire villages of men and women devoted their lives to building great cathedrals to show their love and respect for God. You’ll learn about John the Baptist, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, Charlemagne, St. Albert the Great, Dorothy Day, St. Patrick, and many others. These stories are great for personal reflection or conversation with your kids. I love how it describes your relationship with Jesus as a friendship that is different than your friendship with people. Each story continues to talk about your friendship with Jesus. I have little kids and my oldest is the only one old enough to get anything out of it...he is 6 and has a really good attention span for a 6 year old. I would recommend this book for ages like 7-12.
This is a neat book. I gave it to my nephew for a First Communion gift. It mixes religion with "super heros" so I figured it would be a hit. The book has colorful pages and looks very interesting, even my family looked at it with interest as if THEY wanted to read it! It's nice and thick and has a hard cover and is durable. The kind of book that can last for years and be used heavily.
I bought this book for my granddaughter -- 8 years old and a great reader. She started on the book as soon as I gave it to her. She loves the stories. When I asked which saint she most liked, she answered, "Mother Theresa." This book offers 21st century children a portal to their religion's culture and beliefs, using relatable language presented through storytellers' craft.
Amy Welborn has created a great book that introduces kids to some of the very human men and women who became saints, special friends of Jesus. This book is unique in that instead of focusing on the individuals themselves the focus is on the seven virtues that define a saint's life.
Purchased this for a communion gift for my great nephew. It appears to be written in a style most boys 8-10 would be drawn to.
I got these for First Holy Communion gifts and the two recipients both loved them and read them as soon as they could. The saints are somewhat a current variety and heroes not yet canonized are also included. This is a great choice for Middle School-age kids.
We bring this book to church with us so the kids can read thru it. I love this book. We do Catholic homeschool so it is nice to have this a a backup to our curriculum.
This book is not for very young children. The way some of the stories are told can be a bit frightening for some children. For instance, the story about Maria Goretti made my daughter scared for a while. She already knew the story from another book and didn't feel that way before. I definitely do not like a lot of the reflections the author writes at the beginning of each saint/heroe's life. I was expecting to find the life of the saints and heroes but not the author's comments/reflections about them.
