Not too many years ago I Googled MK Brown and came up with nothing. As soon as I discovered Stranger than Life I ordered it. Just got it. I Will spend hours tonight with coffee and an occasional cigar pouring through this. When my National Lampoons would come in the mail the first thing I would do is go to the comic section and read Aunt Mary’s Kitchen. God it was wonderful and still is. I’m always trying to guess which character looks like her. Perhaps the woman on page 65. Right now I have to clean my studio in preparation to paint something else that’s horrible.
One of the great illustrators with a remarkable unique style that is always fresh, unusual, but quite approachable. I am so glad to have found this book!
I've been dreaming of an MK Brown anthology for years'n years now, and this one fills the bill. Big and sumptuous, it contains pretty much everything this exceptionally witty and talented cartoonist had published from the early '70's and twenty-five years thereafter, in exquisite detail and with warts and all intact (in some strips you can see the texture of the watercolor paper she used; others, the areas where she cut and pasted some corrections or re-dos. All this reveals her process and is fascinating to me. I took it all in, between guffaws!) Given the quality of the publication and Amazon's excellent price, I'm thrilled to add this to my collection of cartoonists' work.
MK, you nuts, girl. Worth the price of the entire book is the infamous Reagan-era NatLampCo "Oh jeez, did anybody see the candidate eat the rat on stage??" cartoon. Now more relevant than ever.
If you're like me, you first discovered her in the National Lampoon prime years and quickly became a fan of her unusual style. However, years later, finding any of her compiled works was difficult at best. So, when this collection was released, I jumped on it. It is a terrific walk down memory lane and fitting tribute to her talent.
She is crazy funny and an incredible artist! Buy her book and you won't be sorry! I love her characters, she is a gifted unique cartoonist. It's not "female" humor, either, whatever that is. My husband might even find it funnier than I do.
This is my Gutenberg . It is a jewel that will be forever treasured by its ability to invoke laughter . Once I saw Beans Morocco all those years ago in a copy of National Lampoon , have been an admirer of MK Brown . I LOVE it ! You will too .
Wonderful collection of cartoons by one of my favorite artists.Fair warning ,after delving into her world do not be surprised if everyone you see starts looking like an M.K. Brown person!Watch out for those giant bananas on Maui!
