From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-- A collection of fables, folk tales, and poems, as well as excerpts from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , Pinocchio , The Wind in the Willows , The Nutcracker , and Peter Pan . Paintings by 16 different artists accompany the selections. Much of the art is highly reminiscent of the romantic works of 19th-century illustrators; some paintings actually have the same palette, arrangement of figures, and characters found in earlier artistic interpretations of these stories. Unlike Edens's The Three Princesses (Bantam, 1991) and The Glorious Mother Goose (Atheneum, 1988), which include early illustrative renderings of these works, this book holds little historical interest. It seems to be designed for home collections rather than for libraries, which will have all of these selections in many other sources. --Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, LaramieCopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I bought this looking for engaging fairy tales for my 5 year old. These do not always have happy endings, but the illustrations are phenomenal. Very captivating. Some stories I am saving for when she is older, but the length is just right to keep her attention, but push her focus.
This is a lovely book that I read to my girls for bedtime. It is filled with many different stories and is a wonderful older version fairy tale book more in the era of a brothers grimm instead of disney
My first attraction to this breathtaking book was the beautifully designed cover illustrated by one of my favorite artists by the name of Scott Gustofson, who is featured throughout the inside of this handsome treasure along with sixteen other remarkable artists who's artful paintings flow through the pages of this masterpiece that will continue be a part of a child's life forever. All of the unforgettable nursery rhymes, poems and stories we all know so well where chosen with great thought which created this special collection of art and literature. Small hands will be eager to turn all 303 pages as the stories unfold at the same time enjoying the brilliant artwork that perfectly accompany each treasured tale. Remember Hansel & Gretel? Remember Rumpelstiltskin? And don't forget The Frog Prince. These are just a few of the favorite stories attached to the pages that will spark the mind of a child and bring back fantastic memories of the old but young at heart. This masterpiece will attract the attention of all ages and be passed around for generations to come. This wonderfully mastered book of beautiful artwork and classic storytelling is not to be left off anybody's book self that enjoys a great fable mingled with fantastically illustrated paintings. When this book touches your hands, the child inside will surface and the youngster beside you will truly glow. A Treasury of Children's Literature is a well-deserved title.
We just love these old fairy tales. My son has somewhat darker, more macabre tastes and it is refreshing to read these non-"Disney-fied" stories. I remember hearing these growing up, feeling conflicted about their sometimes unhappy endings, but feeling that those versions had richer narratives and were more thought provoking. The book itself is a beautiful volume, with large gorgeously rendered illustrations in brilliant colors.
I'm so glad I found this book again. I missed it for years. It's wonderful for adults and children alike.
My daughter loves this book. We read a story to her every night. Sometimes the story is a bit "rough" from an old-world writing standpoint (like cutting open the wolf in Red Riding Hood). However, it's the real story and my daughter is able to distinguish between real and fantasy, even at 4-1/2. No political correctness in this family. Read the book and don't be squeamish about this things. Life is full of challenges. Suck it up!
My young nieces and nephews are few so much media daily, but loved to hear me tell these all fairy tales to them. I was a bite skeptically about ordering the book because the cover looks so dull. When I opened the pages, I found beautifully illustrated pictures. Kids love to hear the story and look at the pictures. It aids in building the imagination and vocabulary. It is our favorite read when the come to visit. Order a copy for them to take home. I hope I have hooked them into reading.
This book is full of good stories, from nursery rhymes to stories for somewhat older children. It has many of the traditional tales that I believe all children should recognize.
