Steven Bingen’s Hollywood’s Lost Backlot: 40 Acres of Glamor and Mystery is fascinating—if you are a movie buff. Anyone who has only a passing interest in Hollywood history will likely not find the book fun. There are no scandals, no intrigue related here. There really aren’t a whole lot of juicy La-La Land tales. What we do find is a meticulous examination of a movie studio with a long and storied past. This is a place where much of Gone With the Wind was filmed, a place that was Mayberry with its Sheriff Andy Taylor, a place where Christ was crucified in two versions of King of Kings and The Greatest Story Ever Told, and a place where King Kong and Tarzan ruled over the jungle natives. Bingen lovingly tells of each nook and cranny of these 40 acres, throwing in some anecdotes, telling us how certain set pieces were re-purposed for various films and TV episodes, and examining its place in Hollywood history. Unlike the fabled backlot of Universal, which became a theme park, unlike the backlot of MGM, which was sold and demolished, unlike the Warner Brothers backlot that is still in use for filming and can be toured, 40 Acres, its common name but later known by various names and owners—among them Desilu, the production company of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz—was used until the mid-1970s, and then was virtually destroyed as if it had no history at all. So yes, this is a fascinating book for movie buffs, indeed.
Truly enjoyed the book and was somewhat familiar with many of the photos through the Bison Archive site.Very well done and glad to add to my library of "Backlot" books. My only complaint is that the cover is alreadycoming apart and I wished that they had published in hard back or with a a better cover. Interesting to note that myemployer currently operates a "big box" studio in the exact location of the camp from The Gomer Pyle Show. Doubt if anyone in the company would know this or even care.
Another wonderful film history book. Thank you sirs for another wonderful time travel.I have just received it and just browsing thru but know from my other Bingen purchases --what I am getting into. I can't wait to go page by page. Thanks to Mr. Bingen& Co., I now can make a new itinerary for my next trip to Hollywood.
Steve Bingen, with the encyclopedic wisdom and photo assistance of Marc Wanamaker, has created yet another triumph, leading readers across the original Ince Studios and 40 Acres backlot. A fitting companion to Steve's MGM, Warner Bros. and Paramount Studios books. Highly recommended.
I have always had an interest in Movie & Television Shows Back Story & When they destroyed the Old MGM 40 Acre Back Lot A Lot OF history was destroyed. Many War movies, Gomer Pyle, Combat, Gone With The Wind, Etc were lost for good. This book keeps the history alive with pictures and a great story.
I have devoured Bingen’s 3 previous books about Hollywood studios and this one is just as good. This one is different because I had no previous knowledge of it. Just like his other books the best parts are the studio maps and photos of sets. This studio location was really important: early Cecile B DeMille films, King Kong, Gone With The Wind, Andy Griffith Show exteriors were filmed here. Also, one finds out the importance of Desilu.
Interesting book on a cool topic that has very little documentation. My only complaint is that half the book is about the Culver Studio and not the backlot. Still, a good, interesting read.
I have always felt that the "backlot" of a movie studio was it's best feature, the part we all recognize in our favorite movies and TV shows. I had always wondered about 40 Acres and this book answered my questions and gave me fantastic pictures recording it's glory to it's destruction. Well written. Bravo!
