LEHLA ELDRIDGE is a talented young illustrator and part-time actress who spends time between the UK and South Africa. As a cook she has spent a significant part of her life in and around kitchens, including a pub kitchen, London cafés and catering at her father's summer art school in Italy. She has also mastered the art of cooking for large numbers. The South African Illustrated Cookbook is Lehla's first book and she currently lives in Cape Town.

I purchased this book as a birthday gift for a friend who grew up in South Africa. It was such a hit at the birthday party, that several women asked where I got it so they could get one too! In fact, the birthday girl had to wait to view it, because the guests were taking so much time going through the pages and exclaiming over the various dishes.Each page presents an authentic South African recipe. My friends who grew up in South Africa recognized these dishes and were quite nostalgic for them.Along with the recipe is a short blurb about how the author obtained the recipe. These made interesting stories and added to the romance of the dish.What I love most about the book (not being from South Africa myself) are the charming illustrations on each page. These were drawn by the author, and they are of various places she visited while there. Thus, every page is colorful and interesting.If you're looking for a charming, uncomplicated South African cookbook, then I would not hesitate to recommend this. Get it fast while they're still available, because my local bookseller told me it is now out-of-print.
I've tried several recipes from this book and each and every one of them turned out wonderfully- amazing me, my family and friends. I love the artistic side too! Actually many of the drawings either remind me of my experiences in Africa or enhance my vision o it.The only problem with this book is complete lack of photos. I know it would ruin the whole 'drawn style' but I "eat with my eyes" and I am always more eager to try and make a dish that I know looks good when ready. (oh, and I instantly know what is it going to be without having to read through ingredients and instructions)Apart from this - a perfect little book :)

I gave this as a gift to my brother and his South African wife. They said it had lots of recipes for dishes they had eaten and would like to try and make at home in the states.
Very disorganized book recipes all over the place
Just to let you know, Apartheid is still alive in South Africa. GREAT food there, though, especially what the Native Africans cook. Thanks for this great cookbook, got some great original recipes.
I purchased the cookbook as a gift for a South African student who visited our home forthe Christmas holidays. I had never met the young woman, and expected that shemight be shy at first in our presence, and that the cookbook might be an icebreakerto provoke conversation. Our guest proved not at all shy with persons she'd just met,but the cookbook still provided much occasion for discussion about food and customs.We enjoyed the illustrations. One pictured a retail shop that was minutes away fromher home in Capetown, and we all had questions about ingredients for recipes that wereunknown to us. This was a terrific buy for the purpose intended.
