This map is excellent for use on Isle Royale and is reasonably up to date (there was a fire on the island in recent years that wiped out a section fo trail on Minong). The waterproofing held up very well in rain but the map was not stiff in the cold. The map takes both sharpie and ballpoint writing well and holds the ink.The terrain features are accurate in all the areas I visited in 2014. It's a BIG map but I like that because it allows a high degree of fidelity, especially handy when you decide to (or are forced) off trail. The map cuts very well, if you want to trim it down to size for your specific trip . I don't hike on water so if I'm staying on one end of the island I'll cut off all the water around the island till the map is as small as possible (with room for navigation errors).The one improvement I wish they'd make is adding a trail distance chart like they have with the water distance chart to make on the fly planning easier.This is a great map for traveling to a great segment of isolated wilderness.
It was adequate for the trip but lacking. The trails are so well marked on Isle Royale you almost don't need a map. The biggest problem that I had with this map was the lack of detail of the trails between campsites. When you're walking on the trail there is no way to determine how far you walked from your starting point or how much more you have to go to your destination. The hash marks that represent the trail are not to scale. Also, the distances are marked in miles and the grid on the map is in kilometers. That's a little confusing. I looked around and it is the best map "out there" for Isle Royale. Just don't expect jaw dropping detail! More topographic measurements would have helped.
This is probably the most accurate and useful map available for Isle Royale. It provides all the details of trails, water depths, hidden rocks, campsites, etc. that any visitor would need to know. We recently took a kayaking trip there over the summer. I used this map constantly to figure out where we were and where we needed to go. It was dropped in the water constantly, folded, bended and crumpled, and it held up through a week of this. If/when we take another trip there, I might buy another, since the creases are starting to fade in spots. But based on what we put it through, it exceeded expectations.
Just got back and this was handy to have for planning our days. Nice that it's waterproof and stain resistant. Nice heavy base paper and easy to read size.
as advertised. would have prefered entire island all be on one side but otherwise good paper and clear illustrations make for a good reference tool
This is a good map. It has all of the trails that we encountered on it. The milage amounts seem to be accurate. This map is also pretty waterproof, which is realy handy when you are using it in the rain.
I've been looking for this map of Isle Royale for years. Couldn't of been happier when I received it. Had it framed and hanging above my desk in my office. I love to be able to see the details of the island end to end on one continuous sheet. Not the best map for back country usage, but perfect for in home display.
Nice heavy duty map that seems to be printed on a Mylar-like material. Should be very waterproof and tear-resistant.
