Fans of true crime, here's one that's way too close for comfort. A wide swath of upstate New York was frozen in terror in 2015 when two of the nastiest criminals you can imagine broke out of Dannemora prison. This was no joyride. These guys were monsters, and the cops and residents of the surrounding area were hellbent on bringing David Sweat and Richard Matt in—dead or alive.Michael Benson is a careful, effective, and deft crime writer. This is the second of his books I've read (the first was The Devil At Genessee Junction) and I want them all.Benson walks a fine line when he reports the salacious details and the gore. I bet he was tempted by the juicy details, but he tells the story straight. Not that he's embarrassed by the sleazy side of crime. There's plenty of that here. But he's engaged in accuracy and analysis, with a bit of philosophizing at the end. If you live in New York State or are a fan of true crime, don't miss this one. Sweat and Matt are nightmare material, and this book might induce a bad dream or two. Totally worth it, if you ask me.
Of the three books on the infamous escape from the prison in Dannemora, New York, I like this one the best since it goes into detail regarding the past crimes of escapees Richard Matt and David Sweat. Wild Escape is another good book on the subject but I like this one somewhat better. It also goes into detail the inmates used to mesmerize prison employee Joyce Mitchell into providing them the necessary implements to do their work. Finally the book concludes with the post-capture details involving the community, David Sweat, and Joyce Mitchell. The book contains eight pages of photographs. If you buy one book on this subject I would suggest this one would be an excellent choice.
I saw several Lifetime movies and documentaries about this Escape but this author's accounting of everything surrounding the Escape is very well written and I read the entire book in one day. I think this is a must read for true-crime fanatics and you won't be sorry for purchasing
I lived in Malone, NY when this escape took place. It was unbelievable! The author gives you history on the area and the prison, very interesting. It makes you wonder how no one realized what was going on until it was too late. Good reading for a dreary winter night. This author is prolific and has written many other true crime books.
An easy read the promo for the Life time movie channel sums up the story very well.. It is forever remarkable to me the way people can think and pull others into their delusion and how easily they can justify their reasons for doing so.
Bought this because I was watching the Showtime Series - thought I could find more information, but sadly it did not give you anything more.
