A well written exploration of one mans opinion of sailboat aesthetics. I was disappointed in it's not having color pictures of some of the classic boats like the authors other works. The inclusion of lofting and line drawings are a nice touch but often their diminutive size makes them unreadable. The authors style gets repetitive if read consecutively but I assume this to be more of a reference book for most readers. It will be a "goto" for me in researching classic craft and a great addition to my sailing library.
This book has been useful for getting ideas, dreaming, and learning about different boats.I enjoyed the illustrations. It complements other books I have on sailboats.
From the chapter on John Letcher's Aleutka, "...if you don't care about the world around you then you don't belong in it. Go away". No its not an environmentalist ranting but the end of a sailing perspective and a fundamentalism I have never read so eloquently explained. The passion and descriptive straight talk is not limited to just this boat or just this boat builder. This has been my favorite boat book, the one I go back to again and again for reference, for perspective, and to get my sea legs back again.
This book is one for the dreamers. It highlights older boats that cost a small fortune (and still do). The designs and interiors are all dated, as you would expect from a book of this age... but the boats are still stunning.... especially the classic interiors. No plastic here... except for the hulls. Good background information on the makers of the yachts as well. I will never own any of these sailboats.... but it's a great book for dreamers.
Black and white illustrations give this book an older feel. I use this book as a yachtmans guide to care of a sailboat only. Purchase The World's Best Sailboats, Volume 2 if you are interested in pictures.
