Being a layman with no psychological background, one would think "What could possibly be of interest here?"WELL; for starts- An amazing look at life in the early 20th Century. How people in different cities (countries & continents) communicated. The post was fast & efficient. However, looking at the incredible handwritten letters, one gets an appreciation for the amount of time & thought that went into writing anything that wasn't family news or gossip. Exchanging breakthrough ideas by mail & discussing them was a time & effort consuming undertaking. It made communicating an art that is sadly in short supply today. Even though telephones had been instituted, they were still sparsely available; though the Freuds had one for years, it is known that Professor Freud hated them (and they were only mentioned 3 times in a book that covers a 7 year period). That said, there was very little real theory presented here, which made it extremely accessible to me.A look at two men, destined to become giants in their fields, as they developed their ideas & fought through the non-acceptance & ridicule that can come along with new ideas. Their determination & belief in what they were doing was enlightening. As they had no real infrastructure in place, it was like watching the birth of any large business or corporation; embracing that which worked, discarding plans that didn't. And gaining acceptance along the way.A look at the basic history of that time, & the realization that many of the top people in their fields working with them (in Vienna & Austria) would soon die at the hands of the Nazis. The world was changing wholesale; this was a look at a small piece of it.And lastly, the story of two men finding & loosing an intimate friendship based on a mutual love of psychology; quite possibly one of the first 'bromances'. While anything but sexual in nature, it was obvious that there was a very strong bond between them, which evidenced itself as more of a father-son (or mentor-student) relationship.A slow read as compared to an action thriller, as you have to think about what you're reading. Extremely enjoyable.
This book really lets the reader feel as if they know these guys. It is quite interesting to be a 'fly on the wall' during the correspondence of the two great men!
These two men had to clash eventually. Freud was a medical doctor, a scientist. Jung was a philosopher, a dreamer. Freud knew that if he gave any hint of religion in his ideas, all the other scientists would ignore him and his ideas. But Jung's ideas insisted that human beings and their consciousness simply had to include something about Spirit, no matter how teacher Freud felt about that! These letters reveal how these two men reacted to one another after they broke their relationship. Anyone interested in Jung, Freud, Neumann, Adler is missing something important by failing to read this book

I loved this book mostly because I have been fascinated by Freud for many years and now I am studying Jung. To have the privilege of reading their letter back and forth is a treat. Also there are insights into current problems that Psychology still grapples over.
I liked it.
Fascinating resource!
I would recommend to anyone who has aprofessional interest in psychoanalysis. I found it very helpful and humanizing Freud and Jung in a course I gave to retired adults.
