I originally tracked this book down because it is issued by the same company that produces the sea glass identification card set, (Pure Sea Glass Identification Deck). You see that card deck at every glass show, museum and jewelry show on the California Coast. The photos are excellent and the little info-bits on the cards really whet one's appetite for sea glass hunting and collecting.Anyway, this book is written by the person behind that deck. It is spoken of as being THE sea glass book, but it's a little spendy for a casual collector. We aren't obsessed, but we are enthusiastic, so we decided to splurge on the book as a treat. It is worth every dime.Sure, there are lots of great photos. But there are plenty of books with lots of photos. In fact, and this is the important point, while most other books are mostly nice photos and a cheerful song and dance, this book has so much fascinating info that you will find yourself sitting down and reading at length. There are, in no particular order of priority, tips about locating sea glass, explanations of the subtleties of weathering, a history of glass making and of color and coloring. There are extended reviews of sea glass sources - including bottles, tableware, flat glass, marbles, utility glass, containers, insulators and bonfire glass. There is some consideration of appraising rarity.Basically, you get over two hundred pages of amiable instruction in the company of a knowledgeable and engaging expert in the field. You come out the other end informed, encouraged, and raring to find that one in a million red piece that will be the center of your collection. You will absolutely have a better understanding of and appreciation of the sea glass you see in shows, and even the sea glass you might have in your own collection. (You will undoubtedly have one, "Oh, so that's what that is!", moment as you read.) Certainly, no other book better balances enthusiasm, information, encouragement, insight and freshness. Like a well weathered cobalt blue piece, this was a happy find.
Beautiful and informative book. Pictures are clear and true to color in identifying beach glass. Also gives the history of glass with a timeline. Also shows what the beach glass might have been in another life. Good complement to my pure beach glass identification cards. A must have.
This is a wonderful book to refer to when finding glass on the beach as it contains lots of information about glass production for someone like myself, who has taken ordinary glass, both old and new for granted. I think of all those summers on a beach as a child, looking for that perfect rock or shell, picking-up a piece of glass and saying, "Oh, it's just glass." Although, even then, in the 1970s, I remember that red glass was a highly prized find, even if one wasn't beach-combing for glass. The book is well done, has enough information without being over-the-top for amateurs, and has excellent photos of glass, both in their original antique bottle form, as well as their beach-glass form. The photographs of beaches and oceans also make this book a great coffee table book and one that has quickly become a pleasant way to visit the beach without actually going there (unfortunately, I live a good distance from any beaches).
I purchased this book after my children (4, 5) developed an interest in collecting sea glass after finding their first pieces on the beach. This summer we collected pounds of the stuff on vacation, and the children couldn't wait to get home to the book to see if they had found any rare colors (we found gray, pink and black!).The photos are beautiful and the information is so comprehensive and interesting that I often find myself toting it round the house to browse its pages. It tells you about colors, where the glass may have come from, what the glass may have been before it became a shard, and countless other fascinating tidbits.It's such a lovely book that it sits on the table at the entrance to my home with an apothecary jar containing our favorite pieces of sea glass next to it.I highly recommend it as a beautiful and interesting book and as a great reference. Now if I could just find that elusive piece of red or orange sea glass!
Richard LaMotte did a wonder-filled job of putting together this informative and comprehensive book on sea glass. I honestly have enjoyed reading every page. I had no idea that there was so much history hidden in every piece of glass, and even though I have collected glass over the years, I never understood the relationship between winds and tides and the weather that deposits these beautiful little gems on our shores. Mr. LaMotte shares all this knowldege with such passion that reading his book not only feed my intellect but also inspired the beachcomber in me. And, the photographs are simply beautiful. Every image works to support as well as illustrate all the topics that are being discussed. The entire book is truly a piece of art in itself. I will read and re-read this book. It is a must for anyone and everyone who loves sea glass.
I love this book! I've been a beach glass collector since I was a child, but I never knew the long history (and how to's) behind sea glass collecting until I got this book. It gives great photos and descriptions of all the types/colors of glass as well as categorizing them between "extrememly rare", "rare", "Uncommon", and "Common". After looking it over, my son and I were even more thrilled when we found some glass this past weekend and realized they were both in the "rare" category! We already knew from the book that they must be at least 100 years old. The books talks about how to find it, best conditions, dating, etc. Highly recommend it!
