I picked this book up after feeling homesick for my Northeastern childhood after I moved South. I did not expect to ever really make anything from this cookbook, as I was really only interested in flipping through to remember the clambakes and picnics my family would attend and throw. Oh, the slightly rose tinged memories of summer afternoons spent on a manicured lawn in the country, adults getting slightly intoxicated in the hot sun and children running rampant.Unfortunately the whole "I'm not actually going to use this book" statement did not remain true after my brother came to visit and saw a recipe for Mac & Cheese. Needless to say it was delicious and I'm slowly working my way through the rest of the recipes to test them as well (two or three times in the case of the drinks). For the most part none of these recipes are groundbreaking, but instead are familiar returns to things our mothers, fathers, aunts and uncles would make (the men in my family LOVE to cook).It makes a great gift to people that enjoy cooking, but aren't borderline insane enough to think they are the next culinary genius. So far I have purchase and shipped three copies to friends and relatives spread across the US, hopefully they actually cook something out of them rather than almost make the same mistake I did!
I bought this to "go with" my replacement Preppy Handbook, (the one I had in high school disappeared) but, it's a great little cookbook in its own right, - and has drink recipes - you know, gin and tonics, Pimm's cups, Bloodies, etc. I guess I grew up preppie because so many of the recipes reminded me of my childhood or things I routinely cook even now. I like cookbooks with pictures and, while this cookbook, does not have a picture for every recipe, it has enough that I don't feel 'cheated' by a lack of pictures. The book is divided into theme-based chapters:The Formative YearsSummer and the Living is EasyThe Sporting LifeThe Grand TourBrunch as a VerbThe Cocktail PartyLuncheons and ShowersHome for the HolidaysThis cookbook includes many useful asides throughout as well as a final section that I found incredibly helpful - includes recipes for making stock, items you need for a well-stocked bar, things that should be in your fridge, things that should be in your pantry, spices you should have, etc. This book has quickly moved into my "favorite cookbooks" category and I recommend it for anyone who likes good, fairly easy-to-prepare dishes, who likes to entertain, or aspires to entertain, and occasionally likes to show off with something a bit more "fancy." That's just about all of us.
Lots of Old Favorites are found in this delightful book and I am enjoying reliving my childhood memories through these receips and the authors comments....I grew up in a town featured in the Original Preppy Handbook so of course I would enjoy this...thank you for bringing them back for me to share with my family...!
Liked the recipes, but already had a lot of them. Perhaps that's not a fair criticism because the book does not pretend to be new and original - quite the opposite - so maybe I should not have been surprised. Didn't think the "narrative" was particularly engaging compared to the original Preppy Handbook, back in the day.
The only thing I dislike is that I found Many recipes for liquor asssuming that everyone drinks. That is soo not the case. Otherwise it was fine!
Perfect easy fun read
American classic cookbook with an East Coast edge. It was the perfect gift for my Preppy husband who loves to cook.
These are the recipes of my youth, and now I'm going to proudly bring them back into my kitchen. Nothing fancy or particularly modern here, just good, classic food (and drinks!) that I'll be glad to taste again. Was a most enjoyable read. Now I'm off to write my grocery list...
