I was really impressed with this book when I first got it because it was filled with beautiful photos and drawings. But its advice was WRONG so many times, and made me waste a lot of time and money.First off it was impossible to make a plan for the trip with it. The book goes block by block in many places, the stuff to see has no star ratings, and the book gives almost everything equal reviews, so it was really hard to plan a visit as a first timer. I just couldn’t tell what was really important to see.The section where they give you suggested day plans was even worse. The book told me that I could do the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in one morning, so I planned on that, and bought advance tickets to the Tenement Museum for the four of us in the afternoon. Turns out it is IMPOSSIBLE to do all those places in one morning. It took an hour just to get through security and on the first boat! We rushed through and didn’t enjoy them because of it and STILL missed our time at the Tenement Museum ($100 down the drain for the four of us). On another day, we followed their plan to explore the Upper West Side, then do the United Nations and then go to the Lower East Side. We spent most of our time getting from one to the next. It was a disaster (that’s when we finally threw away the book). And it was SOOOOO out of date. Looking at the book in advance we tried to make reservations at Mission Cantina (CLOSED), Angelica’s Kitchen (CLOSED), Carnegie Deli (CLOSED FOR YEARS!!), Da Silvano (CLOSED), etc. It became a family joke. We felt lucky that Tavern on the Green was still around, as the book said it was great and it turned out to be our worst and most expensive meal of the trip. A total tourist trap!We also wasted a lot of money because the book said that most Broadway shows sell out. NOT TRUE! We bought full-price advance tickets to Once on this Island, Beautiful and Waitress and found that they were ALL at the TKTS booth in Times Square. So again we wasted hundreds of dollars. Really, really disappointed in this book. I could go on, because we found other mistakes in it, but this is too long already.
I purchased this book due to its prominent "2018" date on the cover. Inside, the book gives the revision date as 2017. It still lists the Carnegie Deli, which closed in December 2016, as a recommended restaurant. It also recommends the Waldorf-Astoria, whichclosed in February 2017 for 3 years. This type of outdated information has made me lose confidence in whether the guide was revised extensively or at all.
Great guide. Wonderfully detailed and beautifully illustrated. I used it more for research ahead of my trip rather than an actual carry around guide - though I did pack it and consulted it frequently from my hotel room. I've found books to be better for pre-trip research because they include EVERYTHING for one to filter through. With online research you tend to zero in on just the big attractions and miss some of the most interesting hidden gems because you just don't know they're there.A nice feature of this guide is the tear-out laminated fold up map which I actually folded in half again and kept in my pocket for all my travels about town - it helped extend my smart-phone battery life. It shows every street and landmark yet it's just big enough for older eyes. I only wish the subway portion of the map included Brooklyn. All in all the book served me well and I highly recommend it.
Love reading DK manuals when planning a trip. The price was fantastic as well. DK books are super for reference materials even in this digital age. I purchase a new manual each time I'm planning to visit a new city.
My girls (my wife and 18yo daughter) went to NYC for an adventure before Maggie takes off for college. It was planned of course way in advance. I bought this from reviews as one of my wife's gifts for her birthday. She and my daughter laughed, ole Dad buying a book in the electronic age. Upon their return the book was worse for wear. They depended on this book to set their day's sights and places. They managed the subways using it and said they'd been lost without it. They had a ball. Excellent working aid for a visit to NYS
I received one of these as a gift back in 1995. It was my NYC Bible. It taught me almost everything I needed to know that I used for almost ten years of spending time in the city four times a year. Not having been in the city for ten years now, I wanted to make myself up to date and refresh my memory on several things, so I bought the 2015 edition. These DK books just keep getting better! If you're planning a first time trip ANYWHERE there is a DK book for, BUY IT!!! They are very smartly put together, and durable as all getout. I'm sure you can use the large foldout map in the back cover at least a hundred times before it starts to show any wear. Every aspect, from the physical to the informational, of these books are top drawer. They are, simply put, beautiful books.
As a person who actually lives in Manhattan, I speak from the perspective of someone who is looking at the information to see if it is accurate to my experience and if it is easy to understand. As always, DK Eyewitness Travel Guides come through with shining colors. This series of travel guides are my absolute favorites. They are arranged in logical order (in this case by museums, theatre district, historical sites, etc.) and have enormous numbers of beautiful pictures to correspond with the text. Your interest is piqued by the colorful pictures and you are given all the pertinent information such as hours of operation, cost of tickets, or meals, and ways to reach your destination. Maps are always included using all of the various forms of transportation that are available in this magnificent city. No matter what you destination may be, DK Eyewitness Guides are always the best. This is the 2015 New York City Guide and as expected exceeds all possible hopes for any visitor to our wonderful town. Don't leave home without it!
